Meet Romeo! After his previous owner passed away, Romeo was left on his own until he was brought to the Kentucky Equine Adoption Center through Animal Control in March 2025. Since arriving at the Center, Romeo has gained weight, made new friends, and grown more confident in his new surroundings. While we do not know much about his early history, he is ready for a fresh start and the opportunity to discover his potential.
 
Romeo appears to be an unraced, unregistered Thoroughbred and is approximately five years old. He is now at a healthy weight, barefoot, and sound. He has formed strong bonds with his pasture mates and seems to find comfort and confidence in the company of other horses, perhaps because of the time he previously spent alone. He receives two quarts of Hallway Feeds Staminoats® split between two daily feedings and continues to thrive in our care.
 
From June through August 2026, he trained with John and Kathy Barr of Raising The Barr in Nicholasville, Kentucky, thanks to a grant awarded by the ASPCA. During his time with the Barrs, Romeo was introduced to a saddle through groundwork and continued daily handling, which helped him build a foundation while giving us a better understanding of his personality, abilities, and potential. He has not yet been ridden, so his adopter will need to be an experienced horse person comfortable continuing the training and development of a young project horse.
 
Smart, athletic, and a flashy mover, Romeo has plenty of potential and could be a prospect for a variety of disciplines. He is not a finished riding horse, but his future is still wide open. For an experienced adopter looking for a young horse to develop and grow with, Romeo offers the opportunity to build a partnership from the ground up. This adopter has extensive hands-on experience with horses, often gained through years of riding, training, and formal education. They're confident working with green, unstarted, or more challenging horses on their own and have a strong grasp of advanced riding, care, and management—including supporting horses with special medical needs. They may even work professionally as a trainer, rider, instructor, or equine caregiver.
