How to Adopt
At the Kentucky Equine Adoption Center, we welcome horses from every background—and we’re dedicated to helping each one find a loving, permanent home.
If you’re ready to adopt, the first step is to complete our adoption application. This helps us learn more about you so we can match you with a horse that fits your experience, lifestyle, and goals. A $25 non-refundable application fee applies.
Once your application is reviewed and approved, we’ll reach out to schedule a visit so you can meet potential equine partners in person. Applications remain valid for one year, giving you time to find your perfect match.

FAQs
How much does it cost to adopt a horse?
Adoption fees vary depending on a horse’s age, training, and needs. Fees typically range from $500 – $3,000, and every dollar directly supports the care of horses at the Center.

Do I have to live in Kentucky to adopt?
Not at all! We regularly adopt to approved homes across the United States. If you’re out of state, just be sure to plan transportation in advance.

What if I’ve never owned a horse?
You’re not alone—many of our adopters are first-time horse owners! Your level of experience is carefully considered when we recommend horses that could be a good fit. We’ll also provide guidance and resources to help you feel confident as you begin your journey with your new horse.

Can I visit the Center before applying?
We’d love to have you visit! You can schedule a tour through our Tours page to meet our staff and learn about our mission. To meet horses available for adoption, though, you’ll need an approved application first.

I’ve submitted my application. Now what?
Application review typically takes 5–7 business days, depending on how quickly we can reach your references. Once approved, our Barn Manager will contact you to schedule a visit to the farm so you can meet the horses in person.

Does KYEAC provide transportation for my horse?
Transportation is the adopter’s responsibility, including coordinating and funding arrangements. However, if you need recommendations, we’re happy to share a list of trusted transport providers on our Resources page.

Can I adopt more than one horse?
Absolutely! Many adopters choose to bring home a companion or pasture mate for their adopted horse. Only one approved application is required—no need to apply multiple times.
