Internships

Intern With Us!

Located in the heart of horse country, the Kentucky Equine Adoption Center (KYEAC) offers a hands-on internship experience for those looking to gain real-world equine rescue knowledge. As a rescue that takes in all breeds from a wide range of circumstances, no two days are the same. Interns gain exposure to every aspect of care, rehabilitation, and barn management in a working rescue environment. This unpaid internship is ideal for students and aspiring equine professionals who want meaningful, practical experience, mentorship, and a deeper understanding of equine rescue operations.

Barn Management Internship Overview

Interns work alongside our barn staff and trainers and are actively involved in the daily care of our horses. Responsibilities include feeding and watering, turning horses in and out, mucking stalls, maintaining barn areas, and assisting with general facility tasks as needed. Interns are fully immersed in the daily rhythm of the barn and play an important role in supporting horse care and welfare.

Throughout the internship, interns gain hands-on experience caring for horses with a wide range of medical and nutritional needs. Many horses arrive at KYEAC requiring specialized care, including nutritional rehabilitation for those who are underweight or overweight, as well as ongoing management of common equine medical conditions. Interns also learn about different training methods used in a rescue setting and how consistent care supports a horse’s recovery and long-term success.

Expectations & Schedule

We accept interns of all experience levels and value individuals who are dependable, punctual, and eager to learn. Interns must be willing to help where needed and able to perform physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 pounds. Reliable transportation is required.

Internships are available in the spring, summer, and fall. Interns must be able to commit to at least two weekdays and one weekend morning per week. Scheduling is flexible, and we are happy to work around class schedules to help interns meet their required hours.
