Lightning Fire
2017 15.2 HH Dark Bay Thoroughbred Mare
“Lightning” arrived at our facility in July 2025 through animal control as part of a neglect case. She was extremely emaciated and was immediately placed on a carefully monitored refeeding program, where she has been steadily regaining her strength. Despite her difficult start, Candy has made remarkable progress in her recovery and continues to improve each day. She is now nearing the end of her refeeding program and is living outside full-time in a pasture while gradually increasing her grain intake.
What we’ve come to know is a truly lovely horse. She enjoys human company, happily soaks up grooming time, and loves nothing more than relaxing in the sun for an afternoon nap. While she has not yet begun formal groundwork—allowing her to conserve calories during her recovery—she has proven to be well-mannered and kind. Lightning stands quietly for the farrier, ties calmly for grooming, and leads very nicely.
During her lameness evaluation, Lightning flexed positively in her right hock and right hind fetlock. However, her X-rays were not concerning, and her care team expects improvement as she continues to gain weight and build muscle. Once her weight is fully restored, she will begin a gradual rehabilitation program, with her return to work closely monitored to ensure her comfort and long-term soundness.
Lightning Fire is a special mare with a soft soul, and with the right support, she has a bright future ahead. She’ll be available for adoption once she’s reached a healthy weight.

Adoption Home Level: Intermediate
This adopter has spent a good amount of time around horses—through lessons, mentorship, or hands-on experience—and feels confident handling and caring for them independently. They’re comfortable riding at all gaits (walk, trot, and canter), and can lunge or round pen a horse with ease. They also have some experience with less-seasoned or “greener” horses, especially when working with support from a trainer.
