2017 15.2 HH Dark Bay Thoroughbred Mare
“Lightning” arrived at our facility in July 2025 through animal control as part of a neglect case. Severely emaciated upon arrival, she was placed on a carefully monitored refeeding program and has made remarkable progress in her recovery. Her foal, Firefly Forever, also made a full recovery and has since found a loving adoptive home. Lightning is now enjoying a pasture full-time with a small group of mares.
Through her journey, we have discovered a truly special mare. Lightning enjoys human attention, happily soaks up grooming sessions, and loves relaxing in the sunshine for an afternoon nap. While formal groundwork has been postponed to allow her body time to recover, she has already proven to be kind, well-mannered, and easy to handle. She stands quietly for the farrier, ties calmly for grooming, and leads beautifully.
During her lameness evaluation, Lightning flexed positively in her right hock and right hind fetlock. However, her X-rays were not concerning, and her care team expects improvement as she continues to gain weight and rebuild muscle. Once her weight is fully restored, she will begin a gradual rehabilitation program, with her return to work carefully monitored to prioritize her comfort and long-term soundness.
Lightning Fire is a special mare with a gentle spirit and an incredible will to overcome. After everything she has endured, she continues to show patience, kindness, and resilience. With continued care and the support of the right adopter, Lightning has the opportunity to enjoy a bright future filled with comfort, companionship, and the second chance she deserves.

This adopter has spent a good amount of time around horses—through lessons, mentorship, or hands-on experience—and feels confident handling and caring for them independently. They’re comfortable riding at all gaits (walk, trot, and canter), and can lunge or round pen a horse with ease. They also have some experience with less-seasoned or “greener” horses, especially when working with support from a trainer.
