Meet Gatsby! Registered as Shah’s Luger, Gatsby is a gorgeous Off-the-Track Thoroughbred who came to the Kentucky Equine Adoption Center through Animal Control as part of a neglect case in January 2025. Since then, this sweet gelding has made great progress and continues to show us just how much potential he has.
 
Sweet, curious, and eager to learn, Gatsby gets along well with his pasture mates and tends to settle comfortably in the middle of the herd. He is a quick learner who enjoys engaging with his handlers and has shown particular promise with liberty work. Gatsby thrives with consistent groundwork, clear communication, and soft but firm boundaries. He is also very food motivated, an easy keeper, and eager to please.
 
Gatsby has been diagnosed with grade 1 DSLD (Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis), meaning he is in the early stages of the condition. While DSLD can progress over time, Gatsby is currently sound and preparing to begin under-saddle training. Once started, we expect him to be suitable for light riding. He currently wears nail-on shoes on all four feet to support his thin soles and encourage greater hoof depth.
 
Given his history, Gatsby is looking for a patient and compassionate adopter who will continue building his confidence and appreciate his thoughtful nature. He does best with someone who pays attention to his body language, provides consistent guidance, and gives him the time he needs to trust. With the right person by his side, Gatsby has all the makings of a rewarding partner and a very special addition to his future home.

This adopter has spent a good amount of time around horses—through lessons, mentorship, or hands-on experience—and feels confident handling and caring for them independently. They’re comfortable riding at all gaits (walk, trot, and canter), and can lunge or round pen a horse with ease. They also have some experience with less-seasoned or “greener” horses, especially when working with support from a trainer.
