2008 15.2 HH Chestnut Thoroughbred Mare

“Candy” arrived at our facility in July 2025 through animal control as part of a neglect case. She was extremely emaciated and was immediately placed on a carefully monitored refeeding program, where she has been steadily regaining her strength. Despite her difficult start, Candy has made remarkable progress in her recovery and continues to improve each day. She is now nearing the end of her refeeding program and is living outside full-time in a pasture while gradually increasing her grain intake.

Candy is strongly bonded to the mare she arrived with, Lightning Fire, and currently experiences some separation anxiety when they are apart. We expect this to ease as both mares fully recover, complete their refeeding program, and are gradually introduced to one of our mare herds, where Candy can form additional relationships. Within herd dynamics, Candy tends to rank higher on the social hierarchy and carries herself with quiet confidence. She is also excellent for the farrier.

Due to significant damage to her right front fetlock—believed to be the result of an untreated joint infection before her arrival—Candy will not be suitable as a riding horse. While she is currently pasture sound, she will be seeking a quiet retirement home once her recovery is complete, where she can enjoy a comfortable and well-deserved retirement.

Adoption Home Level: Intermediate

This adopter has spent a good amount of time around horses—through lessons, mentorship, or hands-on experience—and feels confident handling and caring for them independently. They’re comfortable riding at all gaits (walk, trot, and canter), and can lunge or round pen a horse with ease. They also have some experience with less-seasoned or “greener” horses, especially when working with support from a trainer.
